Each Friday OrangeCoat stops working on client work and starts working on OrangeCoat.

This is a journal of that work.

Speaking of stats and Ta5 this is my most popular Flickr photo, by far. Phil can’t be the only one clicking on it, can he?

I pitched an idea for Friday side project this week that included using Twitter as the foundation. It was well received by the OCers but after today’s massive downtime problems I’m reconsidering putting time into a project based on Twitter.

If MJ’s Bulls career was like Ted Danson’s run on “Cheers,” then his Wizards comeback was “Becker,” and this current Bobcats debacle is definitely “Help Me Help You.”)

OC4 Stats

We spent some of lunch looking over stats from both Google Analytic and Adwords. What we pulled out of the meeting:

  • We are going to be designing more custom marketing boxes for services screens
  • Advertising for blog design is probably not the best use of money
  • Josie is still more popular than Jimmy C

A ramble on planning

So I’ve been thinking about how to best explain how OrangeCoat plans and the best I could I come up with was we plan by doing.

We are spending some of this morning to finish up a proposal that is going out today. It’s an evolution from past proposals. We explain, organize and think about things a little differently than we did in the past. I’m pretty sure we will use this new proposal structure going forward. The thing about it is, we would have never just outlined that structure one day if we had a to-do list item to “tweak the proposal structure”. It grew organically from our needs and while actually working on a proposal.

The same can be said about a bunch of our stuff. We re-write our business plan by redoing our website. We don’t need to spend the extra time to write a formal business plan, we spent a ton of time writing a business plan that also serves marketing piece.

We made a ton of design and UI changes to OC4 after it went live. Etc, etc.

We plan by doing
We practice organic planning
Our business is always in Beta

Damn it Twitter

Not to join the choir of people bitching about Twitter not working, but….

I’m trying to use a Twitter post I made a while ago in proposal (for real) and I can’t get to my older archives of Tweets right now. Damn it at least get your act together enough so that I can see archives of my own work.

We LOVE your work… but fear we may be shopping for the “cadillac” service when we’re on a “hooptie car” budget

Friday Gameplan

Welcome back folks, it’s been a while since I’ve done any proper Friday Tumbling. I blame everyone but me. That’s just good management. Any who, the plans for today include

  • Get the final blessing for the email. It’s been written, designed and formatted for a while. We just haven’t pulled the trigger. That will happen Monday. Promise
  • Improve our sales process from the initial meeting to the quote. This includes upping our initial meeting game and streamlining our quote process. Got thoughts on all that.
  • Reviewing stats for OC4 and seeing what if anything we can learn from that. Evan’s got print outs.
  • Listen to and review the new ChipperDemon release, “A Whole New Appreciation for Bangs.”
